Warnham

Image
Hi everyone! Today I visited Warnham Nature Reserve.
In the first hide was a striking male Mandarin, a pair of Teal as well as 3 Mallards. As I was walking to the next hide there was a another 3 Mallards resting in the sun on the grass. I took this opportunity to get close up to them and take some photos.

In the second hide was about 10 Goldfinches squabbling on the feeders and 2 Long-Tailed Tits feeding on some suet that had been left out. I also saw a Wren, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Blackbird, Robin and surprisingly a rat feasting on the bird seed that had fallen from the feeders.
Walking back I heard the unmistakable call of the Chiffchaff, looking up into the trees there it was with its plumage looking amazing in the sun. Going back into the first hide again there was a group of about 20 Tufted Ducks. Suddenly there was the call of the Kingfisher and 5 Seconds later it whizzed past. Appearing from nowhere a Great Crested Grebe came up from the water and then disappeared again. A Mute…

Pulborough Brooks

Hi Everyone! Today I visited RSPB Pulborough Brooks.
Before even entering the reserve I saw a male Pheasant and Jay. On the way in the trees there was 3 Linnets. In the first hide there was 3 Snipe (my highlight of the day) clearly visible on a small island on the water. They also swam which I haven't seen before and flew (normally I just only see one hiding in the grass.)
In the distance there was about 20 Shoveler and a constant reminder of Lapwings with their almost robotic call and acrobatic flight.

Also in the distance there was a flock of about 100 Widgeon grazing on the grass. Flying around there was 2 Pied Wagtail. On the way back for lunch I saw a Green Woodpecker, seeing it then I realised how amazing its eyes were.

Heading out again I saw a Wren deep in the vegetation as usual as well as 2 Canada Geese and a Mute Swan in the next hide. In the following hide there were 5 Teal in front of me and a Little Egret flying past and disappearing behind the long grass. Also th…

Tilgate Park

Image
Hi everyone! Today I went to Tilgate Park in Crawley.
There were lots of Coots on the lake which were being very territorial as usual, they kept frightening each other off all the time. Also there was about 200 Black-Headed Gulls circling around in the air who were joined by 2 crows. As I carried walking I heard the unmistakable call of the Buzzard, looking up one was soaring in the sky. Further up in the now cloudy sky another one joined in, circling around whilst calling. After about 5 minutes their calling stopped and they both disappeared into the distance.
Now on the other side of the lake there was a Cormorant drying its wings in the sun.
There was also 2 Treecreepers climbing up a tree. Looking at the other lake there was a Great Crested Grebe that managed to get a fish and swallow without it being snatched by the Black-Headed Gulls.
A Mute Swan was also being very aggressive to a group of Canada Geese, it kept chasing them off so it could have the whole lake to itself.

Warnham

Today I went to Warnham Nature Reserve in Horsham.
In the first hide I saw about 8 Tufted Ducks as well as coot. In the Woodpecker Hide there was lots of activity. There was 5 reed buntings (2 male, 3 female) flitting around, about 20 Chaffinches feeding on the ground, 10 Goldfinches on the feeders and 3 Long-Tailed Tits. I also had a very close encounter with a wren which was feeding on tiny insects amongst the vegetation.

After that I visited the last hide which is on the lake. To my right in the distance I could see two Great Crested Grebes displaying to each other (a post up about that soon!) as well as a single Greylag Goose and the usual 3 Cormorants sunbathing in the trees.
As I went back in the Woodpecker Hide there was a cheeky little mouse that kept popping in and out of a tree stump in front of me.
